Why Genetic Testing Matters

HCM: Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy
HCM is the most common heart disease in cats and has a known genetic component in Maine Coons. It causes thickening of the heart muscle, which can lead to heart failure if undetected. Testing involves both a DNA test for the MyBPC3 mutation and regular echocardiograms performed by a veterinary cardiologist. How We Screen for HCM
Every Mainesory breeding cat undergoes an initial Langford Vets DNA test for the MYBPC3 A31P mutation and annual echocardiographic screening. Only cats that test negative or are cleared by cardiologists are used in our breeding programme. This dual approach provides the most comprehensive cardiac assessment available.
Where Our Testing Is Done
All Mainesory DNA screening is carried out by Langford Vets, a wholly owned subsidiary of the University of Bristol and an internationally recognised feline genetics laboratory. Naming the lab matters: every seller says they test, but an independent university laboratory is something you can look up before you buy.
Testing is done from a cheek swab, results come back in three to five working days, and each result is reported as either heterozygous (one copy of the mutation, a carrier) or homozygous (two copies). Those two words are worth remembering — they are what a genuine report actually says, and their absence from a document you are shown is a reason to ask more questions.
PKdef: Pyruvate Kinase Deficiency
PKdef is a deficiency of pyruvate kinase, an enzyme red blood cells need to produce energy. Without enough of it the cells break down early, causing intermittent haemolytic anaemia. Affected cats may show lethargy, weakness, pale gums, jaundice or poor appetite, often in episodes rather than continuously, and it can surface at any age — which is exactly why it cannot be judged by looking at a kitten.
It is inherited recessively: a cat needs two copies of the mutation to be affected, and carriers with a single copy are healthy and show nothing at all. Unlike some conditions borrowed from other breeds, PKdef is genuinely established in Maine Coons, and a simple cheek-swab DNA test for the PKLR mutation identifies both carriers and affected cats definitively.
Our PKdef Protocol
All Mainesory breeding cats are DNA-tested for PKdef, and cats carrying the mutation are not bred. It is worth being clear that this is stricter than the minimum: a carrier paired with a genetically clear cat cannot produce an affected kitten, so many programmes do breed carriers responsibly. We simply prefer to take the variable out entirely.
SMA: Spinal Muscular Atrophy
SMA is a genetic disorder that affects the spinal cord neurons controlling skeletal muscles. Affected kittens develop progressive muscle weakness and wasting. A DNA test identifies carriers, and careful pairing ensures that two carriers are never bred together. Maine coon genetic testing for SMA is essential for any serious breeding programme.
Beyond the Big Three
