Maine Coon Colours: Complete Visual Guide

Lee15 July 2026

A visual guide to maine coon colors and patterns, from silver tabby to smoke and tortoiseshell, photographed on our own CFA-registered cats in Malaysia.

How Many Maine Coon Colours Are There?

The Cat Fanciers' Association recognises more than 75 maine coon colors, but that number is less intimidating than it sounds. Every one of them is a combination of just a few underlying elements: a base colour, an optional dilution, an optional silver undercoat, a pattern, and an optional amount of white. Learn those five building blocks and you can name almost any Maine Coon you meet. Every cat photographed in this guide lives at our cattery in Damansara Perdana.

The Six Colour Groups Explained

Show registries sort the breed into six broad groups. Each group answers a different question about the coat: what colour is the hair at the tip, what colour is it at the root, and is there a pattern running through it.

Solid

A single colour from root to tip with no pattern and no white. The accepted solids are black, blue (a soft grey, genetically a diluted black), red, cream, and white. True solids are less common in the breed than most buyers expect, because the tabby pattern is genetically dominant and hides underneath many apparently plain coats.

Tabby

The most common group by a wide margin, and the breed's ancestral look. Tabby refers to the pattern rather than the colour, so a tabby can be brown, blue, red, cream, or silver. The four patterns are classic, mackerel, ticked, and spotted, covered in detail in our guide to Maine Coon tabby patterns.

Smoke

A solid-coloured cat whose hairs are white at the root. At rest a smoke Maine Coon can look like an ordinary black or blue cat; in motion, the coat parts and a bright silver undercoat flashes through. It is one of the most dramatic effects in the breed and it does not fully develop until the cat is one to two years old.

Shaded

The same mechanism as smoke, taken further. Roughly the top quarter of each hair carries pigment and the rest is silver-white, producing a cat that looks as if it has been dusted with colour. Shaded cats appear noticeably lighter than smokes in daylight.

Tortoiseshell and Particolour

A mosaic of red or cream patched into black, blue, or their tabby versions. Because the gene that produces red sits on the X chromosome, tortoiseshells are almost exclusively female. We cover the genetics and the rare male exception in our article on tortoiseshell and rare Maine Coon colours.

Bicolour and White

Any of the above combined with white markings, from a small locket on the chest to the high-white "van" pattern. The amount of white is controlled separately from colour, which is why two kittens in one litter can carry the same base colour with completely different white distribution.

How Maine Coon Colour Genetics Work

Three genes do most of the work, and understanding them explains why a litter can look so varied. Once you can name these three, breeder descriptions stop being mysterious.

The Agouti Gene: Pattern or No Pattern

Agouti puts bands of light and dark along each individual hair, which is what makes a tabby pattern visible. Switch it off and the same cat becomes a solid. Every Maine Coon carries tabby genes; agouti simply decides whether you can see them. This is why solid black cats in strong sunlight often show faint "ghost" tabby markings.

The Dilution Gene: Full Strength or Soft

Dilution clumps the pigment granules in each hair so the colour reads paler. Black becomes blue, red becomes cream. A blue tabby such as our queen Mulan is genetically a black tabby carrying two copies of dilution.

The Inhibitor Gene: Silver or Not

The inhibitor gene stops pigment from being deposited at the base of the hair, leaving it white. Applied to a tabby it produces silver; applied to a solid it produces smoke or shaded. This single gene is responsible for the entire silver series and for much of what buyers are paying a premium for, as we explain in our guide to silver and smoke Maine Coons.

Which Maine Coon Colours Are the Rarest?

Rarity depends on the registry and the region, but the consistent pattern is that solid colours, shaded silvers, and tortoiseshells are harder to find than tabbies. The rarest of all is a genuine male tortoiseshell, which requires a chromosomal anomaly and is usually sterile.

Worth knowing what does not exist: chocolate, lilac, and colourpoint Maine Coons are not recognised by the CFA. A cat advertised in those colours almost certainly has another breed in its pedigree. Treat those listings as a warning sign and read our guide on CFA registration before paying a deposit.

Do Maine Coon Kittens Change Colour as They Grow?

Yes, and more than most buyers expect. Smoke and shaded kittens are frequently born looking almost solid, with the silver undercoat emerging over the first twelve to eighteen months. Our shaded smoke stud Xue Bi and our silver tabby queen Luna both looked considerably darker as kittens than they do today. Silver tabbies often start out with a warm, brownish cast that clears as the adult coat comes in. Red and cream tabbies such as our stud Caesar typically deepen in tone instead.

The practical consequence: if you are reserving a kitten specifically for colour, ask the breeder to show you photographs of both parents and of previous kittens from the same pairing at adult age. We provide exactly that for every reservation, which is one reason our breeding cats are photographed in detail rather than hidden.

Does Colour Affect the Price of a Maine Coon in Malaysia?

It does, though less than structure and health testing. Silver, shaded, and tortoiseshell kittens tend to sit at the upper end of our pet range because they are produced in smaller numbers, not because they are healthier or better tempered. Our current figures, and what places an individual kitten high or low within them, are set out in the Mainesory price guide.

Our own advice to buyers is consistent: choose the kitten whose temperament and health record suit your household, then treat colour as the tiebreaker. A beautifully coloured cat with an untested heart is a far worse purchase than a plain brown tabby from screened parents.
